My dog sniffed the air, then pulled at his leash. “What is it, Max?” I asked, as he lead me, tugging, through the forest. But then I smelled it too, a heavy perfume I couldn’t quite place. Sun started to filter through the trees as we approached a meadow. As we entered it, I almost dropped the leash. A lychee fruit, the size of a four storey house. I closed my eyes, rubbed them, opened them again. It was still there. It was real. Who? How? At the time, I didn’t know that giant fruits were appearing all over the planet, and it took many years for humankind to understand why.
